Teaching Children. Raising People. Growing Souls.
Ponder the following statements for a moment. Unitarian Universalism is all we teach. That lines up nicely with anther of our statements: Teaching children. When we teach our children about world religions and our Judeo-Christian roots, we are really teaching about our Sources–the wisdom, poetry, and song that inform and inspire us as Unitarian Universalists.
How about: Faith development is all we do. This lines up with: Raising people. Let me state the obvious: children grow up and they make lives for themselves whether we are ready for that or not. We must engage and do our part in this well. Even if we are not ready for our children to grow up, our children must be. And: The entire congregation is our curriculum. Said another way: we grow souls–our children count among our “holy things.”
It takes something special to deliver on the triplet: Teaching children. Raising people. Growing Souls. It takes you. All of you–especially the bit: The entire congregation is our curriculum. I might add, the entire congregation is our teaching team.
At UUCY, religious education has always played a vital role in the life of our church and the faith development of us all. Join us in this holy work with the “holy things.” We trust you with them.
When our next teacher sign-up poster goes up in the sanctuary lobby–it takes about 40 participants to deliver a quality religious education program at UUCY–sign up. We work four-teachers-to-a-team, plus another team of substitutes. All curricula materials and orientation are provided and we support you throughout the year. We conduct a general teacher orientation in late August and New Teacher Orientation in September as well as gather all-together in November and March to discuss how things are going.
To find out more about how to get involved in these ministry opportunities, contact our Lifespan Religious Education Director at [email protected]. We look forward to welcoming U (and U) to our teaching team next summer (summer is really easy) and throughout the coming church year.
